Due to the increasing rise in childhood obesity which often results in a variety of health related issues and also in an attempt to cut down on dangerous traffic congestions at the schools sites as well as the resulting improvement in air quality, a California program called Safe Routes to School was developed.
Taft School is one of several schools in Stockton Unified that is participating in this program which kicked off on DATE with approximately NUMBER students walking to school.

Taft's Garden

Over the past three years, Taft School staff, students, and parents have tried to maintain their expansive school garden. Due to competition from squirrels, gophers, insects and prickly weeds, the garden and its greenhouses have fallen into disrepair. Taft Principal Dee Johnson invited SUSD Board member Gloria Allen on a tour of the garden area and shared with her the history of the garden and the unsuccessful attempts at its revival. Trustee Allen decided to something about it. She contacted a representative from Home Depot on Hammer Lane, and things started rolling. The representative and her boss visited with the intent of donating a few items and some volunteer labor; but immediately realized that the project would take much more than what the local store could donate. The corporate office got involved the corporate office along with several vendors to elicit enough help to really make it work. The Home Depot Corporate Office awarded $3,000 to the Taft Garden project, and the students and staff are closer to their dream of a productive school garden.
